Amazon.com Prime account, Netflix, Hulu and Costco are based on a subscription or membership status. To enter and get the perks like two-day shipping on Amazon Prime, you must pay about ten bucks a month.
Should supermarkets do the same and charge an annual membership or monthly-subscription for their shoppers. A move like this would probably piss off loyal shoppers who come in daily to fill up their shopping carts. Or, they would be frantic if they could not locate their membership number or card.
It would be a hassle, — but Netflix has built a business on it.
